Super Smash Bros. Melee did not make my GameCube favorite games list. The series did not make my favorite games list for the Nintendo 64, and the series will not make my favorite games list for the Nintendo Wii or Wii U. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t love the series. I’ve spent the most hours on the GameCube playing Super Smash Bros. Melee and played a fair amount on the Wii U, but I am much more attracted to single player linear adventure stories. My time spent with the iconic fighting game has left me with a few favorite characters and has left me very excited for the Nintendo Switch version!
Many of the larger characters occupy my favorite spots. Donkey Kong stands out because of his charge arm swing. If the enemy leaves you alone long enough you can charge up your punch and then store it for later. I love unleashing a surprise wallop on unsuspecting foes. He also has a great grab move that lets him maintain complete control over his opponents.
Mario’s other brother has a great set of moves and is not a complete clone of the more famous plumber. Luigi is able to charge up a sideways dash that hits extremely hard, although I have used this move a bit too aggressively and charged right off the edge of a stage. His green fireballs are also great for simple neutral control. Finally, a versatile high jump allows him to be flexible even though some of his other movement options leave him exposed.
My favorite character in the entire series, Link is the best sword user. I am a big fan of the sword users, but Marth, Roy and others don’t have the wide armory that Link has. Link can use the grappling hook to grab foes from a distance, he can use bombs as a quick annoyance and distracter, and then follow everything up with a boomerang or a couple of quick arrows. He also has a fantastic high jump that doubles as a great close quarters attack. I will always pick Link when given the chance and he was the first amiibo that I purchased.
Which Super Smash Bros. characters are your favorite? Which surprise characters are you looking forward to in the Nintendo Switch version?
Personally I hope that they name it “Super Smash Bros. Switch” and then let you pick two or three characters for a tag team battle similar to Dragon Ball FighterZ or Marvel vs Capcom!
