Speed runs are alive and well with Awesome Games Done Quick 2018 off to a great start. At the time of writing Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is attracting 131,231 viewers (myself included) and has raised $216,663 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The stream will continue 24/7 until Sunday, January 14th. But with so many awesome games done quick you will need the following guide in order to keep track of your schedule.
I’ve been watching AGDQ for a number of years and I’ve seen the excitement around speed running reach almost epic levels of proportion. In recent years the growth of AGDQ has started to reach a sustainable level, but the games of 2017 might bring some extra excitement to the table. The following games will be my personal favorites and recommendations encompassing the duration of the event so get your calendars ready! I’ve included the start times, estimated length of each run, and the runners name to assist in your scheduling. All times are EST (UTC -05:00).
Tuesday January 9th
7:29PM Left 4 Dead 2 (estimate 0:58:00)
Runners: mr. deagle, The Master, burhác, MrFailzzz
Runners will be doing a 4-player coop run through of the game and will have to adapt to each level on the fly. The game is hard to speed run well because it is random every time and will require the players to coordinate enemy patterns and use precise movement to make their way to the end.
10:32PM Resident Evil 7 biohazard (estimate 1:50:00)
Resident Evil speedruns are always a blast to watch because they are filled with anticipation at every turn. Resident Evil 7 takes this to the next level with the first person perspective.
Wednesday January 10th
12:32AM Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (estimate 1:00:00)
Runners: Bawkbasoup, wusscake
This will be an ANY% race through the game. Races are always more entertaining to watch, because even if one person misses something the other person has a chance to take the lead. Resident Evil races are fun to watch for the same reasons listed above, the atmosphere is tense in the game and around the speedrun. Plus there are lots of zombies and puzzles!
6:48PM Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island (estimate 2:00:00)
Runners: Calco2, Kolthor_TheBarbarian, yamayuu, Poahr
A four way race in Yoshi’s Island! The run is a little bit long, but the game contains countless jumps, throws, and tongue moves that you would never see in a casual playtrough. Everything is so efficiently planned and a joy to watch.
Thursday January 11th
5:51PM Prey (estimate 0:15:00)
Prey took me 15 hours to beat last year, now we can see it completed in 15 minutes. Expect some creative use of the GLOO gun and lots of fast movement through the levels. Most enemies can be ignored so the key will be getting around the map as quickly as possible. I am curious to see which upgrades are used.
10:11 PM Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition (estimate 0:40:00)
Runners: Vulajin, sigma, Terra, Hydra
Another 4-way race. Ori is a metroidvania style game, and with Super Metroid absent from the schedule this year Ori is the next best thing. The movement in this game is so fluid and the music makes the sometimes frustrating puzzles even better. Expect to see a lot of sequence breaks which will make the game much different from casual play.
Friday January 12th
7:19PM Mega Man 1 – 3 Team Relay Race (estimate 1:30:00)
Runners: WhiteHat94, fastacc, dxtr, coolkid, ColonelFatso, EndySWE, prisi, shoka, Streamline, Zaraki, cyghfer, cassiothird
You can tell I really enjoy the races. With four teams of three people, each person will complete a single classic Mega Man game. Some of the Mega Man stages and bosses are especially brutal so expect to see some unfortunate deaths throughout the run. This will make it a ton of fun to watch if the teams are evenly matched. It also makes you feel like you too can beat Mega Man easily, until you actually try and fail repeatedly.
Saturday January 13th
3:22PM Bloodborne (estimate 1:35:00)
Speaking of really hard games that look really easy during speedruns. Bloodborne is the only souls-like game on the schedule, so it is a must watch. Souls speedruns are all about knowing the upcoming boss battles and intricate environments, expect lots of jumping from high ledges and killing bosses without wearing any armor.
Sunday January 14th
12:15AM The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (estimate 3:57:00)
Clocking in at just under 4 hours, the run will complete all main quests. I haven’t watched a Breath of the Wild speedrun recently so I have no idea how the movement has been optimized. I’m sure there will be a lot of cooking for buffs and unparalleled arrow shots. I bet they already know all the puzzle solutions too! This one is worth watching because it is so new and should be a fresh and fun run to watch.
There are so many more great games being playing throughout the event. Go and check out the stream on twitch.tv/gamesdonequick any time this week to see a great game beaten quickly. I know I’ll be tuning in whenever I have a free second. You can also donate to the Prevent Cancer Foundation and check out the full schedule at gamesdonequick.com! Remember that some games have donation incentives for extra tricks, character names, and prizes that can be won during the event.
Good luck to all the runners!
