The Best Winter Game Sales for Christmas 2017

It is that time of year again.  The time to buy yourself some digital video games through all of the great sales that are happening.  The Xbox Live Store, Steam Store, and PlayStation Store are all having sales to celebrate this time of year.  I recently did a Black Friday deals special for both Xbox Live and Steam, and many of those sales are returning.  Click the links for my recommendations from late November.  However for the holiday sales I would like to highlight some gaming sales for underrated games, that are under $10.  The perfect gift for yourself with all those gift cards that you may find under the tree.

First up, let’s look at five of my picks from the Xbox Countdown Sale, which runs until January 4, 2018.

Bastion – $7.50 ($3.74 on Steam)

An action role-playing experience that redefines storytelling in games.  The narrator reacts to your every move, providing a custom game experience.  Along with hand painted graphics, the game is fun, pretty, and sounds great.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons – $6.00 ($2.99 on Steam)

Guide two brothers on an epic fairy tale journey by controlling both brothers at once to solve puzzles.  From visionary Swedish film director, Josef Fares, the man who once said “Fuck the Oscars.”

State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition – $7.50 ($7.49 on Steam)

Make your stand against the collapse of society in this zombie survival game.  Explore an open world, recruit community members, and design and defend your base from the zombie horde.

Life is Strange Complete Season (Episodes 1-5) – $5.00 ($4.99 on Steam)

A beautifully written modern adventure game that allows you to rewind time and affect the past, present and future.  Includes striking hand painted visuals, a licensed indie soundtrack, and multiple endings.

Virginia – $4.00 ($0.99 on Steam)

An original detective noir story in the tradition of Twin Peaks, Fargo, and True Detective.  A first person thriller, set in a town with a secret and a memorable cast of curious characters.

Now some deals from the Steam Winter Sale, which also runs until January 4, 2018.

West of Loathing – $8.46

A single-player slapstick comedy adventure set in the wild west.  Featuring a unique stick figure, hand drawn black and white graphics, thousands of jokes, and liberal use of the Oxford comma.

Soma – $5.99

A sci-fi horror game telling an unsettling story about identity, consciousness, and what it means to be human.  You will need to outsmart your enemies or get ready to run as there’s no fighting back against the terror.

Emily is Away Too – $2.49

The spiritual successor to Emily is Away, explore a unique story through the instant messenger window, youtube links, facebook profiles, and file transfers.  Features branching paths with multiple messengers.

Papers, Please – $4.99

Your job as an immigration inspector is to control the flow of people entering the Asrtotskan side of Grestin.  Use documents provided by travelers to decide who can enter and who will be turned away.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number – $3.74

“Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is a great game and a worthy sequel. It’s more confident in its style, storytelling ability, and level design than the first game.”
8.8/10 – IGN

I took all of the game descriptions from their Steam store page, to give you an authentic look at each game.  I haven’t played many of these but plan to pick up most of them on Steam (because its cheaper! oh but the Xbox achievements… 😦

What are you looking to pick up?  Did I miss anything?

You can check out the full list of Steam Sales here, with the full list of Xbox Sales on this reddit link, you just have to scroll around to find the posts that contain the sales!

Merry Christmas!

We may not have a podcast for Monday, December 25, 2017, but I will have something holiday themed ready to go!  Play games with your family this holiday season.
