The cycle has been completed. First everyone is beyond excited about all the new stuff that has just been released. Slowly people start to complete all the content and enter a neutral state of wanting a little bit more. Finally people are angry that nothing has been released and nothing has been announced and WHEN WILL WE GET MORE LOOT. Then everything repeats with the new expansions. Well, it is your lucky day because we have a new exotic that has just been released… the FRIEND SHIP.
The community manager at Bungie, David “Deej” Dague, recently wrote the community update “This Week at Bungie.” Within that article he mentioned somethings that made a lot of people very angry. He said:
On a personal note; just the other night, after we caught up in the Crucible, I had dinner with a dude I met as my teammate in a Bungie game eleven years ago. I am a product of the Bungie community. My challenge to every Guardian is to look to the human element in Destiny 2 to fuel your appetite for ultimate re-playability. The ultimate loot is the friendships that can grow out of a game like this. There will be more gear to add to your character (next week, even). The rewards that I’m talking about are the people in the community that thrives in this game. If you let them, they’ll make your hobby as a light-dealing hero on a starside campaign for glory even better.

People (by people I mean people who post on Reddit) were angry that Deej referred the end game of Destiny, as a one that allows you to make friendships and spend time with people you care about.
I believe these people really just want more loot. The /r/destinythegame subreddit is full of posts and comments demanding more customization for weapons, more endgame activities, more strikes, maps, etc, etc, etc. To everyone out there playing Destiny 2, I would ask the following question: Are you having fun?
Countless people love the universe and game that Bungie has created. The subreddit is extremely active (if salty), YouTube videos are always being uploaded, and Twitch streamers have thousands of active viewers on their channels. People love Destiny.
“The friends that you meet online are the reason you play.”
To these people: think of the loot that you receive in a new light. Getting all of the great loot in the game, should not be the reason you keep playing every night. The loot system, and game mechanics are just systems that keep you interested. The friends that you meet online are the reason you play.
I could play dozens of other first person shooters, and even more multiplayer games with my friends. But the end game, the loot system, and the universe of Destiny keep my friends rooted within the game. I play Destiny 2 to socialize with my friends, meet new people, and just chat about my day and swap funny stories. Everything else is secondary.
Sure it feels great to get that new Raid cloak or Sweet Business. But I don’t sign on to Destiny hoping for a specific drop, or trying to grind a strike for hours hoping for the Grasp of Malok. I sign on to play with my friends.
The Verge just published an article titled “Destiny 2’s biggest achievement is that it fits into your life”
The first Destiny did not fit into my life. I had to fit my life around the game. The constant grind for new weapons, gear, quests, etc was like a full time job. The biggest complaint against Destiny 2 is that it doesn’t have as much to grind for.
“Don’t judge a play session by the number of exotic drops or legendary guns that you obtain”
But I would argue that Destiny 2 has just as much to do, and is still as much fun to play with friends. Look at Destiny 2 as an experience. An experience that is more fun with friends. Don’t judge a play session by the number of exotic drops or legendary guns that you obtain, rather consider the amount of fun you had playing with some new friends.
We know that Bungie is working hard to get more content into the game, but when it comes to Destiny 2’s friEND game content, I am satisfied. I have unlocked my exotic friend ship, have you?
Why do you play Destiny 2 and what do you hope they add to keep you coming back for more?
