UPDATE September 30, 2015 ADDED DETAILS ON HOW TO OBTAIN THE FIRST CURSE EXOTIC HAND CANNON
Destiny: The Taken King has shifted the way players obtain exotic weapons from mainly RNG (random) based towards a quest based reward system. Guardians in Destiny can now earn their exotic weapons through easily identifiable quests. Allow some of these quests are much more difficult than others. Read on to find out how you can can obtain each exotic weapon in Destiny: The Taken King. Does your favorite weapon drop from a quest or do you have to wait for Xur to show up with a great inventory? Don’t waste time gathering exotic engrams hoping for a drop that will never come!
We all remember the questing system of vanilla Destiny. Quests took up a slot in your already limited bounty list and would stay there until completed or deleted. Vanilla Destiny offered 5 exotic quests for new weapons, including Bad JuJu, Thorn, Super Good Advice, Pocket Infinity, and Invective. The Vault of Glass added the Vex Mythoclast. The Dark Below added a long and heavily RNG dependent quest for the Necrochasm. Most recently, the House of Wolves added a quest line that allowed you to obtain Dreg’s Promise, Queenbreaker’s Bow, or Lord of Wolves.
Now with the Taken King many exotics will only drop though a specific quest. Below will be all of the known Destiny: The Taken King exotics and how to obtain them. Of course this post will be updated as Destiny lets loose new secrets!
QUEST SPECIFIC EXOTICS
First up are the exotics that are obtained via specific quests.
This auto rifle can only be obtained by Titans who level the Gunsmith to rank 3. You will receive the quest: Back in the Saddle.

This scout rifle can only be obtained by Warlocks who level the Gunsmith to rank 3. You will receive the quest: Back in the Saddle.

BOLT-CASTER, DARK-DRINKER, RAZE-LIGHTER
You can obtain one exotic sword by completing a Sword Reforged quest line from Shaxx. This quest includes collecting Hadium flakes, leveling up and infusing a legendary sword, collecting special planetary materials, and getting ability kills with your chosen element.
RNG SPECIFIC EXOTICS
Next we will look at the exotic weapons that you can only obtain through RNG. These exotics can drop from exotic engrams, legendary engrams, Nightfall rewards, completing Shaxx’s weekly Crucible bounties, or Xur may sell them when he visits the Tower.
Of special note, there are only four exotic weapons new to the Taken King that can only be obtained through RNG. They include the two primary weapons, Zhalo Supercell and The Jade Rabbit (PS4 exclusive) and the two special weapons, Telesto and Hereafter. Every other Year 2 exotic in the Taken King is an upgraded Year 1 exotic weapon. Thus it is unwise to grind for Exotic engrams if you already have the exotic weapons available in the Tower Kiosk. Xbox owners are also now able to get Year 1 and Year 2 versions of Hawkmoon, Monte Carlo, and the 4th Horseman.
THE JADE RABBIT (PS4 EXCLUSIVE)
UPGRADED YEAR 1 EXOTICS
THE 4TH HORSEMAN
THE LAST WORD
Happy hunter Guardians, good luck on your drops! Which exotic weapon are you waiting for?
BONUS: SLEEPER SIMULANT
This Heavy Fusion Rifle is said to rival Gjallarhorn, but it is currently unknown how it is obtained. The current theory is that the gun is revealed after the player collects 5 (or more) of the fusion rifle parts that randomly drop while killing enemies. There is currently no way to track how many you have turned in, but each one has a specific number attached to it. I had 3 or 4 drop during the first week of the Taken King, but have not seen any since! Stay tuned in to Spoon Deep Gaming as new developments occur in Destiny: The Taken King.
