We are a little more than three days away from the launch of Destiny: The Taken King and the exotics just keep getting better and better. Yesterday we looked at some of the new special weapons coming to the Taken King, highlighted with a look at Hereafter, which might be Black Hammer reborn. Today we are all about the heavy weapons. Which new pieces of gear will replace our beloved Gjallarhorn? I have one word for you: Swords! Check out the full list of Exotics at Bungie’s Armory.
One of my favorite missions during vanilla Destiny was the Sword of Crota, I loved killing waves of enemies with a sword. The third person perspective also gave the game a fresh feel and I always enjoyed coming back to that mission. With the release of the Dark Below we got even more swords. Being the sword wielder during the Crota’s End raid was awesome. I even highlighted some footage of myself using the sword using “XBOX RECORD THAT
It looks like there will be five exotic heavy weapons to choose from in the Taken King. We already know about Thunderlord and Truth. It is the other three that most interest me. Let’s take a closer look at Dark-Drinker, a void sword.
The most important thing to note is that it is a sword! Bungie tried to give us a new weapon class during the House of Wolves with the Sidearm, but Swords seem much better. And fun!
During Bungie’s live stream reveal, we saw the fire team using swords. But we did not get a lot of information. It looks like all three of the swords will have a block ability, and it will be more effective against different elemental damage. Personally I would have liked to see an elemental triangle here, where void beats arc, arc beats solar, and solar beats void. That could allow for some nice balance.
Each sword has a unique secondary swing. The Dark-Drinker has the perk Supermassive Vortex, which shoots void energy all around the user. The Raze-Lighter unleashes a solar uppercut, and the Bolt-Caster unleashes an arc lightning bolt.
Finally, note that the swords all have 310 attack power. This is the highest attack/defense value in the game, so we know the swords will be strong. It is also worth mentioning that the swords will not be sold by Xur. However, the armory does mention that Lord Shaxx may sell the item, so I wonder if the swords are connected to some kind of Crucible quest.
I can’t wait to see these swords in action! I especially think that they will add a lot of flavor to Crucible matches. The only thing that a Rift game needs is a guy running around with a sword. I may miss my Gjallarhorn, but it has a worthy replacement.
Which sword looks like your favorite?
Check back tomorrow as we look at some of the Warlock exotic armor!
